Dance Curriculum
Importance of Dance in School
Creative thinking skills are developed through dance, as well as learning the value of discipline, commitment and work ethic. Self-confidence develops as young people overcome challenges to master new goals, learning to apply themselves and accomplish any task put before them.
Dance teaches children about music, rhythm and beat. Students also have a better understanding of spatial relationships and learn to think with both sides of their brain. All these skills enhance a child’s academic performance, as well as their physical well-being.
keeps you fit! Dance teaches the importance of movement and fitness in a variety of ways through a variety of disciplines. As well, dancers learn to coordinate muscles to move through proper positions. Dancing is a great activity to pursue at almost any age provided you are in proper health to handle the rigors of dancing for life.

Dance Curriculum Information
Preprimary & Kindergarten
Movement and balance are taught and practiced in small groups in the classroom and through the Music program.

Grade 1 to 3
Young children begin to experience movement in the Early Childhood Music program, but formal dance instruction begins in Grade 1 to 3. All Academy students are expected to take dance while in the Lower School. In Grade 1 to 3, the program focuses on rhythm, coordination, physical strength and stamina, but choreography is introduced as children learn that dance requires moving in a sequence of steps. Creative movement is also emphasized.
Grade 4 to 6
Children learn and become comfortable with a sequence of dance steps, such as social dancing and musical stage dancing. Children learn to dance with partners and in groups. They also learn that dance is an expression of emotion as well as of culture.

Grade 7 and 8
In Grades 7 and 8, students may elect to participate in the Inter School musical programs which provides opportunities to develop musical and dance skills. This community building experience is educational, entertaining and fun!
